Police are appealing to the public for help following the escape of four detainees from Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday 20 October.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 33, had appeared in court on charges including illegal firearm possession, housebreaking, and outstanding warrants. They were remanded in custody after their appearance but managed to flee before being returned to detention.

The escapees have been identified as Linda Soyeza, Mphumeleli Lufutha, Ismail George, and Tawfeeq Damo. Authorities have released photographs of the men to help the public identify them.

Police have warned that the suspects may be dangerous and advised the public not to approach them. Anyone who spots the escapees should immediately contact the investigating officer, Detective Frederick Abrahams, on 079 498 9937. Alternatively, they can call Crime Stop anonymously on 08600 10111.

The Wynberg court escape has raised concerns about security at magistrates’ courts. This follows other prisoner escapes in the province in recent months, prompting calls for tighter procedures when transporting detainees. Authorities say the incident highlights the need for stricter security measures.

This is not the first major incident at Wynberg Magistrates’ Court this year.

On Tuesday 8 April, the court became a crime scene when a man was shot and killed inside the building. This incident prompted a review of security protocols.

“The police investigation is ongoing, with officers working to trace the detainees while reviewing procedures at the court” said SAPS spokesperson Wesley Twigg.

Members of the public are urged to remain cautious and report any sightings immediately.
