Locals and children joined in on an awareness run through the Lenteguer area following continued vandalism at the Lentegeur Sports FIeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday 10 February local runners took to the streets on an awareness run, ending at the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avron Plaatjies, Ward 76 councillor organised the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe embarked on one of many awareness campaigns, whereby residents and local sport clubs joined to create awareness on keeping our spaces such as Lentegeur Sport Field safe from vandalism,\u201d wrote Plaatjies on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis particular field has been a hot spot for vandalism but tonight we claimed our space back as a collective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hope is to see a reviving of sporting facilities in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can only achieve this if we work together. If you would like to join us on our next community jog, you are more than welcome to join us,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plaatjies says the Lentegeur Sports Field has been victim of vandalism and poor maintenance, resulting in non-maintenance of pitches during covid-19 pandemic, uneven surfaces, no proper irrigation, high hills of sand, no grass and excessive dumping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe intended solution is to tackle the issue as a collective and the process has already begun with the various stakeholders and sporting clubs within Ward 76. This awareness campaign intends to promote a collective approach by including the residents of Ward 76 to add their voice and input into safeguarding our facilities,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will aim to do more of these community jogs throughout Lentegeur where the heart of sports resides within our ward. Our main aim is to promote, include and advocate for proper well maintained training facilities with an important focus on reaching the youth and make Lentegeur the illustrious sports hub it is known for. A hub of hope, a hub where the future sporting heroes will emerge from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
