More than 100 homes in Masiphumelele informal settlement are now connected to the electricity grid, the first of 387 homes the City of Cape Town has earmarked with the budget of R4,5 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday 30 March, electricity teams connected the first 109 homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City\u2019s Mayco member for energy Beverley van Reenen, who helped switch on the first homes in the electrification project, said the City had been working around the clock to have the homes connected before winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are delighted to share this special moment with the residents of Masiphumele today. Thus far, we have connected 109 homes and we will switch on the remaining homes over the coming months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe City thanks the teams who have worked around the clock to connect the homes thus far and we remain committed to enhancing the living conditions of many residents before the winter months.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City\u2019s electricity teams also reconnected customers in the area who had their meters damaged or destroyed by recent fires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018\u2018School learners who are currently enjoying their school holidays, will now be able to study late in the evening and not by candlelight when the new school term resumes (today 5 April). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe City thanks the community for their patience while we continue to carry out the remaining work and we ask residents to please be our eyes and ears and to report any suspicious activity near electricity infrastructure to the City and police.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents can give anonymous tip-offs if they are aware of illegal activity on 021 480 7700. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A reward is also offered for information leading to an arrest or the confiscation of stolen goods.
