Dozens of residents from informal settlements across the city are protesting outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) this morning (Friday 8 April).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are calling for the release of public land for affordable housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside the CTICC dignitaries, including Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Malusi Booi, Mayco member for human settlements and Mmamoloko Kubayi, National Minister for human settlements are meeting ahead of the City\u2019s first affordable housing indaba which kicks off today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karen Hendricks, a Reclaim the City representative, says: \u201cWe are here because we have been fighting for public land to be used for the public good and affordable housing for more than five years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She says there are still pieces of vacant land not that are not being utilised for affordable housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are also calling on the City to scrap the unlawful occupations bylaw which tends to criminalise occupations. The reason why we are occupying these lands is due to the failure of the City to build affordable housing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
