Crime was dealt a blow this month as arrests and investigations made by officers attached to Wynberg Police Station saw an attorney arrested for possession of narcotics and three known crime generators in the area convicted and sentenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday 15 June, a Wynberg Magistrate\u2019s court orderly, arrested two suspects one of them believed to be an attorney aged 42 and a 29-year-old woman \u2013 after witnessing a suspicious exchange between the two while in court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman was appearing in court as an accused. At time of going to press it could not be determined if the two suspects were attorney and client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Capt Silvino Davids, spokesperson for the Wynberg police, says the court orderly noticed the alleged handover of \u201cdrugs\u201d in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSgt Jack was very sharp. He could see something was happening. He saw the exchange just as they were about to leave the courtroom. He affected the arrest and waited on assistance,\u201d says Davids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A variety of drugs, including cocaine, mandrax tablets, crystal meth, and dagga, were confiscated<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspects appeared in court on Friday 17 June and are set to appear again on Friday 29 July. No bail was granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Davids shares that this was not the first time that a lawyer was arrested on drug-related charges at Wynberg Magistrates\u2019 Court. On 10 December last year, Wynberg police arrested a lawyer (48) for dealing drugs at the court following a tip-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Davids says they are committed to rooting out drug smuggling at the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will remain focused on sniffing out these criminals who bring in the drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In another win for the policing precinct, three known crime generators in the Wynberg area will be spending the next foreseeable years behind bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Davids ascribes these successful convictions to the outstanding investigative work done by Detective Sgt Frederick Abrahams who is attached to Wynberg police\u2019s Serious Violent Crime Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This month, Jordan-Lee Williams (29) and her co-accused Chrissondo Dewee (28) were found guilty on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances. The street robbery was committed in the Wynberg area in January last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams was sentenced to eight years\u2019 imprisonment while Dewee received 15 years\u2019 imprisonment of which three years were suspended for five years. Effectively, Dewee will serve 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Riewaan Daniels (50), who was arrested and charged on two counts of housebreaking and robbery in 2020, was also found guilty this month. He was sentenced to eight years direct imprisonment on the first count and to five years on the second count. The two sentences will run concurrently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, officers attached to Wynberg Police\u2019s Crime Prevention Unit \u2013 Sgt Yusuf Williams, Const Brian Nqemi and Const Nazier Hendricks \u2013 arrested a male suspect (31) on Thursday 16 June in connection with drug dealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Davids says they received information that drugs were allegedly being sold from a vehicle parked at the BP Garage on Rosmead Avenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe officers followed up on the information and found the vehicle open. When police officers approached, the driver started the car and drove off. The officers gave chase and eventually blocked him in another area.
