Parts of Muizenberg Beach were reopened to the public on Sunday 7 August after a temporary closure due to a sewage spill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sewage spill occurred on Wednesday 3 August after a pump station failure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time City Health advised the beach be closed between Muizenberg pavilion and Sunrise Beach, as a precaution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last week, signage was erected, advising the public of polluted water which made it unsafe to swim, play or drink between Zandvlei River mouth and Muizenberg pavilion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City\u2019s mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said a sewage spill occurred on Wednesday 3 August after a pump station failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere was a failure at the Clifton Road Pump Station which occurred late yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOne pump was repaired and installed on Friday 5 August and the second pump was repaired and installed on Saturday 6 August.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that repairs have been completed after both pumps had mechanical (bearing) failures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last week, the City\u2019s mayco member for community services and health Patricia van der Ross said the closure would remain in effect until repairs had been completed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe closure will remain in effect at least until the repairs are completed, and City Health is confident that the water quality does not pose a risk to users. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis will be determined through water samples.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added that the beach section between Muizenberg Pavilion and Sunrise Beach were the affected areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe sewer pump station failure is impacting on the mouth of the Zandvlei, which leads to the ocean at Muizenberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cause of the failure has been established, and the pumps are currently undergoing repairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe reinstatement of the pump station operations is a priority, and the City will provide an update once the repairs have been completed.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Water Pollution Control unit is conducting assessments and taking samples while the site is being treated with bio-enzymes, as part of remedial measures to resolve the situation.
