Thanks to a much-needed cash boost the Kensington Old Age Home\u2019s new dementia unit is nearing completion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Home is in desperate need of a dementia unit to aid its frail residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A music evening held recently saw R15 000 raised, and the proceeds will go towards the unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, local comedians also held a comedy night in aid of the unit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mona Angus, Interim Manager for the Home, says they have about 90 residents and adds that about 70% suffer from advanced dementia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to put our patients suffering from dementia in a safer environment, where they can have their own section for activities, meals and medication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says they hope to have the unit completed by the end of next month, September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have sponsors on board for curtains, we are painting there. We found some quotes for the flooring. We still need some safety gates and flooring for the recreational section outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angus explains that the unit is nearing completion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Harley, owner of the Cape Town Record Label (CTRL), an events management company that organised the event, says his goal is to raise funds for community organisations in his childhood community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was born, grew up and was schooled in Kensington, and married in Factreton. My passion and enthusiasm lie in business and events regarding music and the arts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI raised R18 000 for the local neighbourhood watches and R15 000 for the Home between 9 May and 19 July. I would like to thank Helen for her efforts towards this event for the Home.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harley, who has since returned to the Middle East, where he now resides, says: \u201cI will return soon again and do it all over again for other organisations in the future.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angus says they are always in need of donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople can donate in cash or kind, food or toiletries. The biggest challenges we face are budget constraints. We always run out of adult diapers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
