Doordrift Walk recently got a spring clean when a team of 2nd Bergvliet Sea Scouts and Wynberg Boys\u2019 High School learners, led by scout Josh Vincent, cleared alien vegetation along the side of the riverbank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Judy Willemse, 2nd Bergvliet Troop Scouter, explains that the clean-up, which occurred over three weekends (the last being Saturday 3 September), forms part of a much bigger initiative launched last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs a scout group, we started with alien vegetation removal and did a few river clean-ups between Doordrift Road and Constantia Main Road,\u201d says Willemse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With their scout hall located at the Alphen Centre in Constantia, Willemse says they wanted to give back to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are sea scouts and we sail in Zandvlei. The Diep River runs into Zandvlei.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Doordrift clean-up forms part of the Springbok Community Service project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey have cleared much litter from the stream and around the area, but also removed nasturtiums and ivy from the banks,\u201d says Willemse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, they will plant fynbos plants in place of the removed alien vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWith the re-introduction of plant species that originated from that area, we hope to help restore the health of the river, its birdlife and its surrounds,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
