The annual Ladles of Love Sarmiethon took place at Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront on Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of volunteers lined up  to help make 70 000 sandwiches. These will be distributed to 140 soup kitchens across the Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sarmiethon coincides with World Sandwich Day, also celebrated today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar event took place simultaneously in Johannesburg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their joint target was to reach 100 000 sandwiches, but the group managed to make just over 91 000 sandwiches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is estimated that more than 30 million South Africans are food insecure, with 25%  experiencing perpetual hunger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary-Ann Musekiwa, Committee Chair and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Coronation \u2013 the headline sponsor for the event \u2013 says hunger is a pressing issue in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore than half of the population has become food insecure due to the widening inequality in our society and deepening economic stressor globally,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
