To curb
\nopportunistic crime at popular tourist attractions within the Cape Town CBD
\nthis festive season, the Western Cape Government (WCG) launched its tourism
\nsafety unit with Chrysalis graduates today (Tuesday 29 November). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City of Cape Town also announced the expansion of
\nits tourism safety unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The WCG unit will comprise 26 Chrysalis graduates,
\nwhile the City\u2019s tourism safety unit will now have 28 law enforcement officers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The separate units will be focused on ensuring that
\nresidents and visitors receive important safety information about tourist
\nattractions and services available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The units will also coordinate the emergency
\ndeployment of resources and technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 in the 2021\/22
\nfinancial year, the city\u2019s tourism safety unit made 15 arrests, assisted nearly
\n2300 persons with general matters, and attended to 854 complaints. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Visible foot patrols will be conducted at the Table
\nMountain Cableway, Lion\u2019s Head hiking trails, and curb opportunistic
\npickpockets and petty criminals at car parks and other high-traffic tourism
\nhotspots within the CBD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They will focus on areas including Long Street,
\nV&A Waterfront, Cape Town International Convention Centre, Table Mountain
\nCableway, Lion\u2019s Head trails and the Grand Parade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says with the bumper festive
\nseason expected, visitor safety is crucial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cVisible policing is but the most effective crime
\nprevention activity, and the members of this unit will join the thousands of
\nadditional law enforcement officers we have deployed across the whole of Cape
\nTown this year. We are expecting a bumper tourism season and we are doing
\neverything we can to make sure that thousands of locals and international
\nguests, can safely enjoy the summer season in our beautiful City.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nhead, says since the unit\u2019s inception it has made great strides in combating
\ncrime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This unit has made a massive improvement in minimizing
\ncrime in hotspots like Bo-Kaap, Grand Parade, Signal Hill and Table Mountain.
\nWe have arrested ATM fraudsters, we even located passports. Our common goal is
\ntourism safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reagan Allen, Western Cape Police Oversight and
\nCommunity Safety Minister, says: \u201cI am delighted to celebrate that we have
\nthis unit that will go a long way towards making sure that tourists are safe
\nbut also that residents and locals are safe.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, says:
\n\u201cWith the added additional resources set to bolster the unit, we are
\nconfident we can again boast Cape Town as one of the world\u2019s top travel
