After a hiatus of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Cansa Relay for Life Athlone is hosting their event on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 March, from 18:00 at the Turfhall Sports Complex in Athlone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Rashied Isaacs, the media coordinator for the event, they aim to go bigger and better to achieve their objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe theme for this year\u2019s event is \u2018Fighting cancer together\u2019. In the past, the relay was the most talked about event on the fundraising calendar for cancer. There is an African proverb that says \u201cit takes a village to raise a child\u201d and the same adage rings true in the face of cancer. It takes a community to care for and support a cancer patient and their family,\u201d says Isaacs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also says everyone is affected by cancer in various ways and invites the community to rally and support those affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe can make a difference and contribute towards a cancer-free world. The relay is a 12-hour event and features teams, that will have at least one person on the track throughout the night, to honour those who have passed away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCancer Relay Athlone aims to register over 60 teams consisting of 15 members at R1 050 per team. These funds go directly to Cansa SA to render much-needed services in the community that include providing counselling, adult nappies, nutri-meals, bed pans and wheelchairs,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 12-hour experience will be unforgettable for many cancer survivors, family members, and especially those who lost a loved one through cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme on the night includes various laps around a track to highlight the plight of survivors and caregivers and raise awareness of the different types of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event promises non-stop entertainment in a security-controlled environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Families are encouraged to attend from 18:00 to midnight. The adult fee is R30 per person. Children under 12 years pay R15. Participants are encouraged to bring along a fold-up chair and picnic basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
