Learners from Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View, some of whom had never handled a musical instrument before, were introduced to brass instruments for the first time through the Izivunguvungu foundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commander Mike Oldham, the former director of the SA Navy Band, says there were some rare instruments on display during the introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere were two quite rare instruments called euphoniums, which are small versions of a bass tuba. It has similarities to the trombone regarding the size of the mouthpiece,\u201d says Oldham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Grade 3 and 4 learners are already utilising red and blue plastic trumpets which were donated from the United Kingdom (UK).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oldham started the music programme with Kleinberg Primary School teacher Margaret Kindo in 1996 and has since retired from the SA Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The brass band, which caters to children from Ocean View and neighbouring areas, comes together whenever possible to perform on the approximately 30 instruments available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
