Rustenburg Girls\u2019 High School (RGHS) in Rondebosch has made
\nthe Top 10 shortlist for World\u2019s Best School Prize for Supporting Healthy
\nLives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The World\u2019s Best School Prizes, founded last year by T4
\nEducation \u2013 in collaboration with Accenture, American Express, Yayasan Hasanah,
\nand the Lemann Foundation \u2013 are among the world\u2019s most prestigious education
\nprizes. Besides \u201cSupporting Healthy Lives\u201d, categories include \u201cCommunity
\nCollaboration\u201d, \u201cEnvironmental Action\u201d, \u201cInnovation\u201d, and \u201cOvercoming
\nAdversity\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Early this morning, RGHS learners whooped with delight when
\nthey heard that they were in the running for the shared $250 000 (R4 564
\n537,50) cash prize. The government school is one of two South African secondary
\nlearning institutions that were named just after 08:00 today (Thursday 15 June)
\nin the five Top 10 shortlists. The other, Spark Soweto (an independent,
\npartially government-funded kindergarten and primary school in Johannesburg),
\nappears on the Top 10 shortlist for the World\u2019s Best School Prize for Community
\nCollaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RGHS Principal Michael Gates says it is an honour to be
\nnamed one of the Top 10 Schools in the world Supporting Healthy Lifestyles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis competition is open to all applicants, and we eagerly
\nparticipated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Founded in 1894, RGHS has a strong reputation for academic
\nexcellence with their matric graduates often appearing on the Western Cape
\nDepartment of Education\u2019s Top Learners lists. With the aim of balancing their
\nacademically driven focus, the school implemented a Sports Policy which made
\nsports compulsory for Grade 8 and 9 learners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The policy allows learners to choose from a wide range of
\nsports, including both competitive and social options. The athletic instruction
\nprovides one structured and one unstructured sports lesson every 10 days,
\nmeaning students have both organised and creative opportunities within the
\nprogramme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gates says being active and engaging in physical activity is
\ncrucial for academic, social and mental success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe strive for our learners to embrace a holistic approach
\nand incorporate exercise into their daily routines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says the school takes immense pride in their
\nhigh-achieving competitive teams who shine on the sports fields and courts at a
\ncompetitive level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday, we celebrate our success, but tomorrow, we will
\ncontinue inspiring generations to promote healthy lifestyles,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ntrailblazing South African institutions and the culture they have cultivated.

The Top 3 finalists for each of the five World\u2019s Best School
\nPrizes will be announced in September followed by the winners in October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winning school in each of the five categories will
\nreceive an award of US$50 000 (R912 785).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
