Learners from the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology\u2019s (CAMST) robotics team will be jetting off to Chicago in the United States of America (USA) to compete in an international robotics competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Ward 72 councillor Kevin Southgate, 16 learners will be participating in the contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSome of the learners that are part of the team come from Ward 72 and one of the learner\u2019s parents asked if I could assist with financing the trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI wrote to the mayor and the City agreed to sponsor each of the children. As a result they gave R2 500 per child, which was a total of R32 500 in total for 16 learners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The teenagers are leaving on Sunday 2 July. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am very encouraged to learn that we have several young people from our community that (are) part of this robotics team and they are going to the US to compete in a competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen I was approached to assist I thought we should do anything to help our young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was also very impressed when they took me on a tour of the academy and it was so interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haadiyah Slamang (15), a learners at CAMST, says their team often take part in competitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are going over to participate in the Chicago competition and we always reach out to different schools and sometimes start new teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur robotics team has a engineering side, business and robotics and coding, we have meeting logs that keep track of everything that we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe also make an engineering portfolio which is part of all the designs we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slamang says she enjoys coding and hopes to have a career in mechatronic engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
