The South African National Lifesaving Team has been selected to represent the country at the prestigious International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC), in Texas, United States of America (USA) from Wednesday 20 to Saturday 23 September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jill Fortuin, team manager of the Senior Lifesaving Team, says women play a pivotal and often underestimated role as lifeguards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUnfortunately, stereotypes persist that portray them merely as adornments in revealing attire, rather than recognising their strength and abilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese misconceptions extend further to question their capacity to match the physical prowess of their male counterparts in executing daring rescues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team comprises of young women athletes from Meadowridge, Vredehoek, Noordhoek, Fish Hoek, Sun Valley and Retreat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fortuin further explains that women lifeguards consistently demonstrate exceptional skills, determination and resilience in their lifesaving duties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey navigate the same treacherous waters, respond to emergencies with equal speed and offer critical aid without hesitation. The upcoming International Surf Rescue Challenge holds immense promise for the South African Lifesaving Team to exhibit their capabilities to a global audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event presents a platform to showcase not only the collective talents of the team but also to emphasize the \u201cextraordinary contributions\u201d of women lifeguards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, for the team to reach the international competition in Texas, financial assistance is needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDuring Women\u2019s Month, it\u2019s essential to spotlight the achievements of our women lifesavers. Their dedication, accomplishments and the hurdles they overcome deserve recognition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThrough increased exposure and celebration, we can champion gender equality within the surf lifesaving community, while inspiring future generations of female lifeguards to continue breaking barriers and saving lives.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Comprising of 26 dedicated members, including four team management personnel, each participant is a qualified lifeguard actively engaged in voluntary duties to prevent drownings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur lifesaving heroes are not only passionate about their life-saving duties but also excel as the best competitors in their disciplines across South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
