Radiologists and radiology technologists are often the unsung heroes in critical situations by providing rapid and accurate imaging crucial for immediate medical decisions. That they are able to deliver swift, high-quality results underscores their vital role at large specialist public hospitals. It is this contribution to the public health system that is celebrated on World Radiography Day, which took place on Wednesday 8 November.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The radiologists and radiology technologists at Red Cross
\nWar Memorial Children\u2019s Hospital (RCWMCH) in Rondebosch play vital roles in
\nproviding diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy to patients with complex or
\nadvanced medical conditions. It is this contribution to the public health
\nsystem that is celebrated on World Radiography Day, which took place on Wednesday 8 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the theme is \u201cCelebrating patient safety\u201d, which
\nemphasises the role of radiography in ensuring patient safety beyond radiation
\nprotection as well as maintaining efficient radiological procedures in medical
\npractice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radiologists and radiology technologists are often the
\nunsung heroes in critical situations by providing rapid and accurate imaging
\ncrucial for immediate medical decisions. That they are able to deliver swift,
\nhigh-quality results underscores their vital role at large specialist public
\nhospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a range of imaging techniques, these professionals
\nwork tirelessly every day to help diagnose or treat disease, detect injury,
\ndetermine the treatment approach and reduce the need for exploratory surgeries
\n(a diagnostic method used by doctors when trying to find a diagnosis for an
\nailment). These techniques include fluoroscopy, positron-emission tomography
\n(PET), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, X-ray radiography, and
\nmagnetic-resonance imaging (MRI), to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RCWMCH is a tertiary-level specialised paediatric hospital
\nthat treats patients under age 13. Performing more than 30 000 studies per
\nyear, the radiology department at RCWMCH is by extension a unique specialist
\nfacility within an already highly specialised environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRadiology has become pivotal to most clinical
\ndecision-making and is used to confirm clinical suspicions, exclude certain
\npathologies and monitor childhood diseases,\u201d said Dr Ashmitha Rajkumar,
\nconsultant radiologist at RCWMCH. \u201cThe emphasis in treating children is
\nnon-invasive imaging where possible, with patient safety, comfort and risk
\nmitigation paramount. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPaediatric radiology requires a particular set of skills
\nand equipment geared towards children. Everything in the department (and the
\nwider hospital) is tailored towards children, from size-appropriate equipment
\nto protocols and parameters that reduce radiation burden and other risks to
\nchildren undergoing imaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radiographers at our large specialist public hospitals are
\nat the forefront of ensuring imaging procedures are conducted with the utmost
\ncare to minimise radiation exposure while maximising diagnostic efficacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It
\nis worthy to note their expertise, specialties and daily efforts to provide the
\nbest care from the departing point of diagnostics on a day celebrated globally
