Western Cape matrics can be proud after coming out on top with a Mathematics pass rate of 75.4% and a Physical Sciences pass at 82.2% pass.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a tough year behind them, the 2023 matriculant pass rate in the Western Cape increased to 81.54%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Western Cape Minister of Education David Maynier said despite challenges of \u201ccrippling load shedding\u201d and devastating minibus taxi strikes last year, the more than 50 000 matric learners excelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery single one our 50 520 candidates who passed met the requirements to access higher education, with 26 182 candidates (42.2%) qualifying with a bachelors pass to attend university, our highest number of bachelors passes ever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western Cape matrics can be proud after coming out on top with a Mathematics pass rate of 75.4% and a Physical Sciences pass at 82.2% pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese are critical subjects for the national and provincial economy, so we are pleased to see improvements in both compared to 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also have the second highest distinctions rate, with 24 982 subject distinctions being awarded to candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maynier said it was equally impressive to have the retention rate from Grade 10 to 12 increase to 69.3%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGetting both the pass rate and the retention rate to move in a positive direction is a difficult task and we are pleased that more of the Grade 10 class from two years\u2019 prior are writing and succeeding in their final matric exams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School results compared from 2022 to 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fairmount Secondary School pass rate in 2022 stood at 74.5% and in 2023 at 70.5% <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grassdale High School pass rate dropped from 94.6% in 2022 to 88.2% in 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grassy Park Secondary School pass rate in 2022 went from a 76.2% percent pass rate to 66.9%<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heathfield High School achieved a 61.2% pass in 2022 and a 50.5% in 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sibelius High achieved a 67.4 % pass rate in 2022 and a 60% pass in 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steenberg Secondary achieved a 72.6% pass in 2022 and a 84.2% pass rate in 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zeekoevlei Secondary School achieved a 77.8% pass in 2022 and a 72.3% pass rate in 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavender Hill High School achieved a 68.6% pass in 2022 and a 69.2% pass in 2023 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavender Hill High\u2019s stop matric learner Liam Rhoda (18) is a firm believer in hard work and academic excellence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring my matric year, I worked tirelessly to achieve my goals and was fortunate enough to be recognized for my efforts. I was pleasantly surprised to be named the top achiever in my class for the final examination, and I am proud to have been the head boy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhoda says he was honoured to be named valedictorian and to receive the principal\u2019s award for his achievements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis recognition, along with a bursary from the Rising Tides bursary programme has given me the opportunity to study teaching at the university of my choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhoda says his class teachers inspired him to pursue a career in teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope to give back to my community through education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His motto: \u201cYou belong in every room you step into\u201d is something Rhoda lives by. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI firmly believe that with hard work, dedication, and perseverance, anything is possible and I am committed to achieving my ultimate goal of earning a PhD and running for local government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
