Only this time, tents in Ebor Lane have sprung up like mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a mandate on a property for sale in the area and find it impossible to lure potential buyers to Ebor Road. As soon as they see the actual state of the area, they suddenly show nil interest,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These so-called Uli Heydt-buildings are stationed at number 8 and 10 Ebor Road, and 263 Main Road, Wynberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ward 62 councillor Emile Langenhoven said these buildings were registered as problem buildings with the City as far back as 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll these properties were previously owned by the late Uli Heydt and all these properties were vested into trusts. The current situation of the properties is that the owners are seeking an eviction order through the High Court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once an eviction order is served, the owners, together with the roads department, aim to go to the properties and conduct the eviction \u201cwith the assistance of law enforcement and the police\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the eviction has taken place, he added, \u201cthe roads department will close up the lane that stretches from Ebor Road to York Road. Then, the owners will have construction companies on stand-by to brick up the buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only when the properties are finally secured, may the owners go through the sale of the property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is currently a developer who\u2019s interested in the property and who wishes to purchase it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, it feels like we are now very close to a resolution on the Ebor Road and 263 Main Rd properties saga,\u201d Langenhoven said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, concerted efforts by the City and various law enforcement agencies were not quite enough to secure lasting improvements to the properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_296bc92a\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/11053\/03723f89063146e7af16e7df7dd0feb5.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/01cde8dcfe7f4a5fb0d9c5888b711cca.jpg\" title=\"10 Ebor Road is one of three properties owned by the late Uli Heydt, now vested into trusts, to be torn down once a court ordered eviction paves the way to final clean-up operations.\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">10 Ebor Road is one of three properties owned by the late Uli Heydt, now vested into trusts, to be torn down once a court ordered eviction paves the way to final clean-up operations.<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/11053\/befcd470b6a7430383d91ead8d73afed.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1bf61de88974411695bd8331a2fe55a4.jpg\" title=\"This Google Maps image of 8 Ebor Road show signs of habitation as captured in October 2022.\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">This Google Maps image of 8 Ebor Road show signs of habitation as captured in October 2022.<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A multi-agency integrated operation cracked down on the slums dating back to Friday 28 October in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This operation saw officials from the City\u2019s electricity department recording and removing the illegal electricity and water connections (\u201cSuspects try to flee as officers crack down on slum buildings in Wynberg\u201d, <span>People\u2019s Post<\/span>, 28 October).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City\u2019s Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith at the time confirmed that around 170 undocumented foreign nationals were detained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the Metro Police K9 unit also made positive detections for drugs \u201cwith several suspects being arrested\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in July 2022, it was reported that \u201cthe removal of metal gates blocking access to Ebor Lane in Wynberg has been hailed as a step in the right direction to address the slum-like conditions\u2026\u201d The gates, that were illegally placed by occupants living in the lane, were removed by the City of Cape Town\u2019s roads and storm water department (\u201cEbor Lane gates in Wynberg fall\u201d, <span>People\u2019s Post<\/span>, 19 July 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Langenhoven\u2019s Facebook page, a clean-up of Ebor Road was also conducted on 9 March last year. \u201cWith the assistance of the Solid Waste depot manager, EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) and City staff, the road was thoroughly cleaned. It almost looks\u2026 normal. My sincere gratitude to the City staff,\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the latest developments regarding the Uli-Buildings, Langenhoven said this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will see a huge impact on the landscape of Wynberg simply because Ebor Road has always been used as a drug or crime hideaway\u2026 This will unlock a lot of potential for Wynberg, reduce crime quite a bit and add value to the Main Road corridor and related developments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A media inquiry to the City of Cape Town was sent to confirm the recent developments of the Ebor and Main roads problem buildings. At the time of going to print, the City had not responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attempts by <span><em>People\u2019s Post<\/em> <\/span>to reach the current owners of the buildings were also unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Correction: It came to the People\u2019s Post attention the ward councillor\u2019s feedback in that the Ebor Road buildings are to be torn down following a successful eviction of any occupants,<\/em><em>\u00a0was misinterpreted<\/em><em>.
