Excitement is mounting ahead of a mass community cycle event aimed at raising awareness around period poverty among girls and women in impoverished areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With just a few more days before the Strandfontein Sports Complex welcomes local cyclists of all ages and fitness groups to collect much-needed sanitary products for distribution around the province, entry remains open to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cycle for a Purpose event is organised by #AgainstPeriodPoverty in association with the City of Cape Town\u2019s Cycling Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPlease come out and support us by cycling or cheering us along the route to create awareness around period poverty,\u201d says founder, Lindsay Adams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With no pre-registration required, event registration will take place ahead of the cycle at the Strandfontein Sports Complex. Entry to the cycle event will cost five packs of sanitary pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are not asking for money and it does not matter if it is a R5 pack or a R50 pack, we are collecting this for the girls,\u201d says Adams. \u201cWe are welcoming all bikes and all ages. Families, work groups, anyone wearing any kit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adams, who is not a professional cyclist, will join the event. Having cycled a 25 km awareness event in December with the cycling team on a tandem bike, Adams says she looks forward to tackling this event on her own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proceedings will start and end at Strandfontein Sports Complex. The 13 km route will follow Baden Powell Drive via Old Strandfontein Road and into Spine via Witsands and then travel into Dennegeur Avenue via Church Way and back into Spine, doing this loop twice before returning to the sports field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There will be no road closures, but the City\u2019s law, safety, and security teams will be on hand to assist and ensure safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Thursday 28 March, Adams joined representatives of the cycling team at a site visit and was joined by Western Cape Minister for Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie, who will also cycle during the event on Sunday 7 April, at 08:00. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those not cycling but still wanting to support, collection bins will be available for sanitary goods along the water points and at the sports complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
