The City of Cape Town will soon begin roadworks along Turfhall Road to expand its MyCiTi service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1,7 km route will include works on Turfhall between the intersection on the M5 freeway and the intersection of Castor and Benona roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe MyCiTi bus service will operate along dedicated bus lanes (the red bus lanes) along Turfhall Road on route to Wynberg and Claremont. This forms part of the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service to connect commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha with Wynberg and Claremont. Once complete and fully implemented, Phase 2A of the MyCiTi bus service will provide more than 30 communities in the metro-south east with a scheduled, affordable, and reliable public transport service,\u201d says Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas. He says the second phase to the metro-south east is a huge undertaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver the next three financial years, the City will have a number of major construction projects ongoing to implement the dedicated red bus lanes, stations and stops; and improvements to roads and transport facilities to bring scheduled, affordable, safe, and reliable public transport service to over 30 communities,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMultiple construction projects are currently under way in many of the areas already, and as we embark on the latest project along Turfhall Road, I want to thank communities and road users in advance for their support and understanding. We are committed to do the work as fast as we can and to mitigate the impact as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work will take place between 09:00 and 15:00 on weekdays and on weekends and public holidays may happen as or when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temporary detours and walkways for pedestrians will be implemented; residents will have access to their properties at all times. Work is set to be completed in July 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temporary work opportunities will be available as part of this project and locals are asked to register on the City\u2019s Jobseekers Database at the local subcouncil offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a dire and urgent need for a public transport service that is scheduled, safe, reliable and affordable to connect our communities from the metro-south east with other parts of the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the implosion of passenger rail under Prasa\u2019s watch and the fact that it will take some time to repair the damage done, the demand for the MyCiTi bus service has become even more urgent as more commuters rely on road-based public transport to get to their destinations,\u201d says Quintas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During February alone, more than 1,7 million passengers made use of the MyCiTi services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is the latest available statistics, safe to say it is 125 944 more than what was recorded in February 2023 at 1 583 480,\u201d says Quintas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
