A rare and exciting discovery of a honey badger just above the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus on Wednesday 3 April sent waves of intrigue as this species (Mellivora capensis<\/span>) is not typically observed in cities or even the Cape Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discovery was made by Benjamin Wittenberg, a student at UCT\u2019s Institute for Communities and Wildlife in Africa (iCWild). Honey badgers, also known as ratels<\/span>, can be found across Africa, from the Western Cape to Morrocco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wittenberg, the graduate student conducting this year\u2019s iCWild camera trap survey, said at the moment of discovery, \u201cI almost threw my laptop across the room I was so excited. Because it means they\u2019ve been sneaking around without being spotted by the millions of people who use Table Mountain annually\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a UCT news release, it was noted the iNaturalist website has only one entry for honey badgers on the Cape Peninsula: an unconfirmed (and contested) suspected honey badger raid on a beehive in 2014, and a note about a honey badger possibly being killed on Baden Powel drive around the same time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wildlife survey by SANParks last year on Table Mountain captured a single image of a lone honey badger. The UCT honey badger sighting is the first recorded sighting in the campus\u2019 vicinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most common animals we spot are domestic cats and porcupines, and we sometimes see caracals, cape grysbok, mongooses and genets,\u201d he detailed. \u201cThe arrival of the honey badger has enriched biodiversity on Table Mountain \u2013 and challenges the caracal\u2019s status as a top predator in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honey badger is well known for its swagger and ferocity. Even lions are wary of them. Honey badgers have loose skin which enables them to twist and confront any attacker with their sharp teeth and claws. They are adept at catching snakes (and of course raiding beehives), but they are successful generalist predators of small wildlife and even, according to some sheep farmers, lambs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breaking barriers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Honey badgers\u2019 adaptability routinely gets them into trouble with people. They are infamous for tearing down barriers and raiding animal coops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A honey badger recently broke into a pigeon-coop within the West Coast National Park, and was unfortunately shot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closer to home, suburban security cameras in the Constantia area recently captured a honey badger squeezing under a gate and returning with a chicken, according to UCT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That honey badgers can break through even \u201cpredator-proof\u201d barriers. This was evident in De Hoop Nature Reserve when a honey badger killed 11 endangered African penguins \u2013 a major setback for their conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Zoe Woodgate, who set up the original iCWild camera array, said it was yet to be established whether there was a sustainable population of honey badgers on the Cape Peninsula. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are rumours of a honey badger den in Silvermine Nature Reserve,\u201d she said, \u201cbut as yet no sightings of any cubs.\u201d Wittenberg agreed: \u201cHoney badger cubs depend on their mothers for over a year, and we are certainly keeping a look out for a mother-cub pair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breeding and expanding<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If honey badgers have indeed started breeding and expanding on Table Mountain, this has implications for human-wildlife conflict on the urban edge. \u201cCapetonians are used to conflict with baboons and the occasional killing of pet cats by caracals,\u201d said Prof Nicoli Nattrass, co-director of iCWild, \u201cbut honey badgers will provide new challenges for people who keep poultry, rabbits, pigeons and perhaps pet cats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need the help of \u2018citizen science\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honey badgers are among the identified species at risk including caracal, Cape clawless otter, Cape Eagle Owl, large spotted genet, and water mongoose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
