{"id":45848,"date":"2024-06-14T13:12:20","date_gmt":"2024-06-14T11:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/africas-only-submarine-museum-set-to-open-in-simons-town-after-relocation-and-funding-boost-20240614\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:34:54","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:34:54","slug":"africas-only-submarine-museum-set-to-open-in-simons-town-after-relocation-and-funding-boost-20240614","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/africas-only-submarine-museum-set-to-open-in-simons-town-after-relocation-and-funding-boost-20240614\/","title":{"rendered":"Africa&#8217;s only submarine museum set to open in Simon&#8217;s Town after relocation and funding boost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"mso-fareast-font-family:'Times New Roman';color:black;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The SAS Assegaai, Africa\u2019s sole submarine museum, is relocating to Simon\u2019s Town with financial support from the City of Cape Town. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The museum, costing an estimated R5 million, will be a unique tourist and educational attraction, showcasing fascinating technology. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The move is expected to be completed in July, with plans for an official opening later in the year.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">If all goes to plan Africa\u2019s only<br>\nsubmarine museum will be moved to its new permanent location in Simon\u2019s Town<br>\nnext month before opening to the public as a major tourist attraction later<br>\nthis year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">With a R750<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;color:black;\">\u2009<\/span><span style=\"color:black;\">000 financial boost from the Mayor Geordin-Hill Lewis, the<br>\nSAS Assegaai will be moved to its final destination in coming days.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E<span style=\"color:black;\">ight years <\/span>after<span style=\"color:black;\"> clos<\/span>ing<span style=\"color:black;\"> its doors to<br>\nvisitors <\/span>to<span style=\"color:black;\"> the South African Naval base<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/peoples-post\/museum-moves-ashore-20230821\" target=\"_blank\"> the<br>\nvessel is coming ashore<\/a><\/span>, to be situated<span style=\"color:black;\"> next<br>\nto the False Bay Yacht Club and National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 10<br>\nin Simon\u2019s Town.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">Commenting on the <\/span>M<span style=\"color:black;\">ayoral <\/span>F<span style=\"color:black;\">und support<\/span>,<span style=\"color:black;\"> Hill-Lewis said the submarine museum is a unique<br>\neducational and tourist attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThe City is glad to support the<br>\nAssegai\u2019s continued sustainability as a unique educational and tourist<br>\nattraction for schools and visitors from far and wide,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the<br>\nonly preserved submarine of its kind in Africa, containing all sorts of fascinating<br>\ntechnology for young and old to immerse themselves in. We look forward to the<br>\nrelocation of this floating museum to land, along with the expanded<br>\nopportunities for learning and tourism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-r5-million\"><span style=\"color:black;\">R5 million<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">Retired Rear Admiral Arne<br>\nSoderland from the Naval Heritage Trust said the whole project cost an<br>\nestimated R5 million.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThe project\u2019s estimated cost was<br>\nR5 million with the cost of laying foundations, preparing the site and<br>\nattaching lifting beams to the boat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">Meanwhile the actual move and<br>\nfinal preps for opening and restoring the outer hull after opening and<br>\npreparations cost around R500<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;color:black;\">\u2009<\/span><span style=\"color:black;\">000, he added.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cFor lifting and moving it cost R2<br>\nmillion and then about R2,5 million to restore<\/span> fully<span style=\"color:black;\">,\u201d said Soderland.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/peoples-post\/museum-moves-ashore-20230821\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Everybody should visit a submarine once in their lifetime\u2019: Submarine museum moves ashore<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color:black;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">In 2005 the Naval Board approved<br>\nthe retention, as the Navy\u2019s first museum vessel, under the conditions that it<br>\nbe done at no direct cost to the SA National Defence Force and carried out by<br>\nvolunteers who would raise funds to place it ashore.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">Soderland further explained that<br>\nthe new site would be easily accessible to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-easy-access\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Easy access<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThe new site next to the NSRI is<br>\nthe permanent site with easy public access and all the facilities. It is an<br>\nannex to the Naval Museum and falls under it but will be managed by the Naval<br>\nHeritage Trust on their behalf.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">The contractor for the move,<br>\nVanguard Heavylift, which righted the sailing vessel Europa in the V&amp;A<br>\nWaterfront earlier this year, is planning the actual move in the second week of<br>\nJuly.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">Commenting on the R750<\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Arial',sans-serif;color:black;\">\u2009<\/span><span style=\"color:black;\">000 mayoral fund contribution, Soderland said the funds<br>\nhave enabled the move to finally take place.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThe mayor\u2019s donation was the<br>\nturning point as it enabled us to commit to the move at last,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cWe started raising funds in<br>\nSeptember 2022 and only reached R1 million in April, so this now means we can<br>\nactually plan the move and the opening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">While the move of the SAS Assegaai<br>\nis imminent, the opening of the submarine museum is planned for October.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cWe are hoping to introduce the<br>\nAssegaai to the public in early October and to open it for visits by the end of<br>\nthe year,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to complete the shore facilities, provide power<br>\nsupplies to the boat and train up our guides.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">Once open, the submarine will<br>\nfunction as a museum of technology to promote maths and science.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:black;\">\u201cThere is no doubt that it will be<br>\na major attraction, based on our previous experience in running her as a museum<br>\nfrom 2011 to 2015 &nbsp;as well as an educational tool for the youth as it will<br>\nfunction as a museum of technology to promote maths and science.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span
