{"id":45618,"date":"2024-07-02T13:03:04","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T11:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/new-signage-replaces-iconic-mural-at-glencairn-heights-entrance-sparking-mixed-reactions-20240702\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:40:26","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:40:26","slug":"new-signage-replaces-iconic-mural-at-glencairn-heights-entrance-sparking-mixed-reactions-20240702","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/new-signage-replaces-iconic-mural-at-glencairn-heights-entrance-sparking-mixed-reactions-20240702\/","title":{"rendered":"New signage replaces iconic mural at Glencairn Heights entrance, sparking mixed reactions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New signage has replaced the Great White Shark mural at the entrance to Glencairn Heights and Simon\u2019s Town, eliciting mixed reactions from residents. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Councillor Simon Liell-Cock says the change was commissioned by the Simon\u2019s Town Historical Society to preserve the area\u2019s heritage. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>While some residents appreciate the new signage, others miss the mural and feel the location of the sign is confusing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>New signage has replaced the mural of a Great White Shark that marked the entrance to Glencairn Heights and Simon\u2019s Town, which has garnered a mixed reaction among residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ward 61 councillor Simon Liell-Cock shared that the Simon\u2019s Town Historical Society received permission to have the new signage, which was completed two weeks ago, commissioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pedestal was originally built by the Simon\u2019s Town Municipality when it was still a municipality in those days,\u201d he said. \u201cBack then it became derelict and broken down, so the Simon\u2019s Town Business Association wanted to jazz it up with a mural.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liell-Cock added that while he enjoyed the mural, Simon\u2019s Town is a heritage area and the heritage needs to be protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI personally enjoyed the mural art and there were many people who liked it and also many who did not,\u201d he commented. \u201cThere is lots of opposition to street art, but there is also a need for balance, but personally I don\u2019t mind the murals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the new signage, Glencairn Heights community leader Pamela Gush described it as beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_e5f010e6\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cWhile many people argue that because the signage is at the entrance of Glencairn Heights and not Simon\u2019s Town, that it marks the historic entrance to where Simon\u2019s Town actually starts, we are very happy with the new signage.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that the spot was a whale-watching area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new signage has already made a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInstead of graffiti, the historical society decided to have it cleaned up and since then, we have fewer street people stopping there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mixed-reactions\">Mixed reactions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents had mixed reactions, voicing their opinions on social media either for or against the new signage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn artist needs to get busy there again,\u201d a Simon\u2019s Town supporter wrote. \u201cI love this crisp and clear message.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents questioned why the Simon\u2019s Town signage was placed opposite Glencairn and Welcome Glen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not the entrance of Simon\u2019s Town,\u201d one pointed out. \u201cAs a local of the area, I really feel there needs to be a consensus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another agreed: \u201cThe location seems off, but it\u2019s a nice sign and I suppose would be nicer closer to Simon\u2019s Town with penguins incorporated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, others felt the new signage would be confusing to tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe naval depiction would be better suited to Simon\u2019s Town and would be very confusing to any tourist looking for Simon\u2019s Town. The mural was lovely, what a waste to cover it up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-change-needed\">Change needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not everyone agreed with this sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so fantastic that things are maintained and are kept looking good for us and, especially, the local and international tourists,\u201d another commentator said. \u201cI hope it gets people excited about visiting Simon\u2019s Town, for wonderful adventures await them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While residents disagreed on signage, a mural and the location they agreed that good signage was needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt looks clean and professional with a Cape heritage feel, giving a hint of the historical naval town\u2026 just what we need to help and
