{"id":45203,"date":"2024-08-14T06:30:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T04:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/traffic-worries-arise-as-fish-hoek-revenue-department-moves-to-new-location-20240814\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:49:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:49:48","slug":"traffic-worries-arise-as-fish-hoek-revenue-department-moves-to-new-location-20240814","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/traffic-worries-arise-as-fish-hoek-revenue-department-moves-to-new-location-20240814\/","title":{"rendered":"Traffic worries arise as Fish Hoek Revenue Department moves to new location"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The City of Cape Town has relocated its Fish Hoek Revenue Department Walk-in Centre to Main Road, causing concerns about traffic congestion and parking. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Residents and community leaders are worried about accessibility, particularly for the elderly and disabled, in the new location. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Despite these concerns, the City assures that the move will bring positive changes and improved services to the area.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The closure and move of the City of Cape Town\u2019s Revenue Department Walk-in Centre, from central circle in Fish Hoek to Main Road, raised concerns over traffic congestion and parking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a notice last week, the City announced the permanent move of the centre for vehicle registration, account enquiries and licencing to a larger space at the old Standard Bank building in Main Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new customer centre is open to the public from today (Tuesday 13 August). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement last week, the Mayco member for finance Siseko Mbandezi encouraged residents to use the new facility or alternatively use the facility\u2019s online e-service options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur dedicated officials are looking forward to welcoming the very first customers through the new and improved Fish Hoek Customer Interaction Centre doors where customers will be assisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis includes accounts and motor vehicle licensing enquiries,\u201d said Mbandezi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe City is encouraging residents to make use of the convenient e-Services options, check the City\u2019s website, or call ahead before visiting the nearest office if they are in doubt. We are committed to improving our service offerings and customer service at all customer interaction centres in the metro.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fish Hoek resident Christopher Banham tells <span>People\u2019s Post <\/span>that he finds it hard to believe that the centre has moved from a location where there was plenty of parking to no parking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_f21c0c6c\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cI cannot believe that they are relocating to Fish Hoek Main Road. What about parking and excess traffic congestion, police and ambulance services will also be affected. The result will be chaotic,\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He questioned what was happening to the old municipal building and raised concerns that the library and other existing facilities at central circle would also be closed down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When <span>People\u2019s Post<\/span> visited the new site on Wednesday 7 August, there was no parking available on either side of Main Road that was full of trucks, vehicles and pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pamela Gush, a community leader from Glencairn Heights, questioned how the elderly or disabled would be able to use the facility if they have to park far away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a nightmare. Main Road is already very congested and there is no parking available at the building, how are the elderly and disabled going to use the facility?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-positives\">Positives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Subcouncil 19 chair Simon Liell-Cock says the new location will bring about many positive changes to Fish Hoek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Liell-Cock, the new site, which is still owned by Standard Bank, was fixed by the City of Cape Town who is leasing the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe positive is that it would bring more foot traffic to Fish Hoek,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are adding more life to Fish Hoek Main Road and the Standard Bank building that was once derelict is made useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on traffic concerns Liell-Cock said disabled parking bays are available in Main Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a carpark behind Checkers and yes there is a little bit of a walk but there are disabled parking bays in Main Road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that the need for a new customer centre came to light during Covid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince Covid in 2020, it came to light that a bigger space was needed because there were long queues of hundreds of people at the centre which brought up the issue,\u201d he said. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_794fd581\">\n<div class=\"text\">The Fish Hoek desk could not cope with the long lines and at the new centre there are lots more kiosks, desks and computers that would make the process faster.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He assured residents that everything else at the Fish Hoek Civic Centre at central circle will remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything else stays the same such as the licencing department with the drivers testing, the library and Subcouncil office,\u201d said Liell-Cock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positive take away from the move is a cleaner and safer Fish Hoek, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are working at making Fish Hoek safer and cleaner,\u201d he said. \u201cWe fixing up the lighting in the street, cleaning up Fish Hoek
