{"id":45096,"date":"2024-08-27T07:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T05:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/heart-of-cape-town-museum-faces-uncertain-future-after-lease-dispute-20240827\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T18:03:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T16:03:00","slug":"heart-of-cape-town-museum-faces-uncertain-future-after-lease-dispute-20240827","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/heart-of-cape-town-museum-faces-uncertain-future-after-lease-dispute-20240827\/","title":{"rendered":"Heart of Cape Town Museum faces uncertain future after lease dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Heart of Cape Town Museum, dedicated to the world\u2019s first human heart transplant, faces an uncertain future after the curator\u2019s lease was not renewed. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Groote Schuur Hospital Facility Board plans to revamp the museum but without the current curator\u2019s private collection. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The museum\u2019s contents, including valuable artifacts, are at risk of being removed or relocated.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The curator of the Heart of Cape Town Museum says he is being kept in the dark regarding the facility\u2019s future after being informed that his lease agreement would not be renewed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The medical museum is based at the Old Main building at Groote Schuur Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 56 years ago, Prof Christiaan Barnard and a medical team of experts made history by performing the world\u2019s first human heart transplant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patient Louis Washkansky became the recipient of a young woman named Denise Darvall\u2019s heart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALSO READ |&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/peoples-post\/56-years-since-the-first-heart-transplant-at-groote-schuur-hospital-in-cape-town-20231204#:~:text=People's%20Post-,56%20years%20since%20the%20first%20heart%20transplant,Schuur%20Hospital%20in%20Cape%20Town&amp;text=On%203%20December%201967%2C%20Barnard,performed%20the%20nine%2Dhour%20operation.\" target=\"_blank\">56 years since the first heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation occurred in the walls of the Charles Saint Theatre. In December 1992 it was turned into a museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hennie Joubert, the museum curator, he has a 20-year lease agreement with the Groote Schuur Hospital Facility Board (GSHFB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-letter\">Letter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Joubert says the GSHFB informed him earlier this year that his lease agreement would not be renewed. \u201cThey sent me a letter to say I must be out of the museum by 4 July 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joubert revamped the museum 18 years ago and it was opened on 3 December 2007, which marked the 40th anniversary of the historical procedure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joubert says:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_ecfd353c\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cThis is not about me, it\u2019s about the museum. 18 years ago, I got a contract with the board for 10 years with an extension of another 10 years. To build the museum was very costly. I had to get a long lease to do it.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He says he decided to take over the museum to honour Barnard\u2019s memory. \u201cI knew Chris Barnard, he was friends with my father. They worked together in Ceres. My father went to Ceres as a general practitioner and he asked Christiaan Barnard to come and help him. They worked together for quite a while. He often came to us in Ceres. He was a man that I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Joubert, he \u201chas no idea\u201d why they don\u2019t want to renew the lease. \u201cI don\u2019t know what their objective is. I don\u2019t know why they want to do it. I bought all the copyrights of the photographs that Don Mckenzie took, he travelled with Chris Barnard for 16 years. I also bought the copyrights of the film that is also shown in the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of the stuff in the museum is mine. What am I going to do with it? Do I put it in storage or take it to the museum in Beaufort West?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beaufort West Museum houses the Chris Barnard and Medical Science Exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GSHFB confirmed that the lease agreement will not be renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-original-state\">Original state<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, in response to <span><em>People\u2019s Post<\/em><\/span><em>,<\/em> the GSHFB wrote: \u201cThe existing arrangement with the private curator enabled the hospital to combine its artifacts with that of the private collection to bring greater fidelity to the exhibits. However, after many lengthy engagements over the last few years to try and secure the purchase of this private collection, the facility board has decided to abandon these efforts and restore the museum to its original state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_c540d2a9\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/12143\/1bf2d8b34d1b4509a6ebb61fd8a103e3.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/e02a9f2fea374a48a1a96c468376e678.jpg\" title=\"Waxed statues of the medical team in the operating room.\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">Waxed statues of the medical team in the operating room.<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the board, the museum will not shut down but will continue \u201cas a space to commemorate the first heart transplant\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ |&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/peoples-post\/groote-schuur-hospital-celebrates-85-years-of-dedicated-service-20230131\" target=\"_blank\">Groote Schuur Hospital celebrates 85 years of dedicated service<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board says the museum will be redeveloped to reflect all the \u201cmany world and continental firsts\u201d associated with the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an inimitable part of the hospital\u2019s extraordinary history and is one of its proudest achievements. However, Groote Schuur Hospital is world-renowned for its clinical and scientific achievements and has recently been ranked number one in the world as a teaching hospital brand,\u201d reads a GSHFB statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Joubert, the GSHFB offered to purchase the contents of the museum from him but he declined. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_2451f1eb\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cThey offered to buy it for a price of R1,9 million and I spent about R7 million. I said I can\u2019t sell it for that price, it\u2019s not worth it. I asked if could we make any other plans, they said in that case they would (cancel) the contract.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the GSHFB says while it was in talks with the \u201cprivate curators, no final offer was made\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joubert explains that everything in the museum holds sentimental value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are personal things that people donated to me because they believe that I will look after them. This is something that Cape Town must have, its history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t take history away. I\u2019m just sad. It will be a sad day when I walk out there. I devoted many years to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unique-and-historic\">Unique and historic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <span><em>People\u2019s Post<\/em><\/span><em>,<\/em> Karin Barnard Berman, wife of the late Christiaan, expressed sadness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI find it strange that they would want to dispose of something like that. I am not sure why they want to take it away. I think it is sad because it is so unique on the continent of Africa, as it\u2019s a historic event for Africa.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the founders of the original museum Emeritus Professor Johan Brink, part-time senior surgeon at the Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, explains that he hopes the legacy of the world\u2019s first heart transplant performed by the late Prof Barnard \u201cwith the support of a team of academic medical leaders\u201d will continue and that the museum will continue to flourish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GSHFB says it recognises and commends the private curators for their \u201cincredible work\u201d in showcasing the achievements of the first heart transplant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_763a42bc\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cThey have indeed progressed the legacy and reputation of the hospital. We wish to thank them and the countless others who help ensure that the world-class scientific contributions made at the foot of Devil\u2019s Peak are not forgotten.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The GSHFB further says it feels privileged to build on the efforts of the private curators. \u201cWe are excited by the opportunity to reimagine the museum as a more inclusive space, representative of the contemporary achievements of our world-leading clinicians, researchers, and scientists.
