To address this challenge, Cheslyn Steenberg, Ward 56 councillor, is appealing for donations and aims to collect 5\u2009000 panties which will be distributed to primary and high-school girls across the ward.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Steenberg explained that he recently did a sock drive which was donated to schools in Kensington, Factreton, and Maitland and was informed by the schools that there is a great need for sanitary products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/peoples-post\/read-the-latest-print-edition-of-the-peoples-post-here-20240913-3\" target=\"_blank\">The latest print edition of the People\u2019s Post here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>\u201cI was told that they need panties. Girls have complained that they don\u2019t have pads. The purpose is to help girls. It was sad to hear that girls use socks, masks or cut up a T-shirt when they are on their period. This is the sad reality for many girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>He said as a result learners often miss school.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that girls stay in school, that is why we are trying to lighten the burden for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Steenberg said the sanitary drive will run until Sunday 29 September and they hope to do the handover next month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\n<p>Steenberg says donations can be dropped at the Kensington Civic from 09:00 to 14:00 on weekdays.<\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cWe want to reach girls in primary and high schools. They can drop it at my office from Monday to Friday. Whoever wants to come on board is most welcome to do so. This is for the benefit of the girls.
