{"id":44931,"date":"2024-09-17T07:55:15","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T05:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/deaf-awareness-silent-walk-mowbray-participants-experience-life-without-sound-20240917\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T22:56:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T20:56:00","slug":"deaf-awareness-silent-walk-mowbray-participants-experience-life-without-sound-20240917","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/deaf-awareness-silent-walk-mowbray-participants-experience-life-without-sound-20240917\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Awareness Silent Walk: Mowbray participants experience life without sound"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Deaf Awareness Silent Walk in Mowbray aimed to give hearing participants a glimpse into the daily experiences of the Deaf community by having them walk with earplugs. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organised by DeafSA Western Cape, the walk raised awareness about Deaf culture and promoted inclusivity during Deaf Awareness Month. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organiser Jabaar Mohammed hopes this event will foster greater understanding and continue to grow awareness for the Deaf community.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In a unique initiative to raise awareness about deafness participants joined a Deaf Awareness Silent Walk on Saturday 7 September in Mowbray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis walk had a specific aim to provide hearing participants with a sense of what it\u2019s like to navigate the world as a Deaf person,\u201d said Jabaar Mohammed, Director of DeafSA Western Cape and organiser of the initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants wore earplugs for an hour-long 5 km walk, simulating the experience of living without sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/community-newspaper\/peoples-post\/read-the-latest-print-edition-of-the-peoples-post-here-20240913-3\" target=\"_blank\">The latest print edition of the People\u2019s Post here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohammed, the driving force behind the event, explained his motivation. \u201cI\u2019ve organised walks like the Big Fun Walk and the Discovery Walk before, but this one is different,\u201d he said. \u201cMost of our community don\u2019t really understand what it means to be deaf. The idea is for hearing people to wear earplugs and feel what it\u2019s like for one hour during Deaf Awareness Month.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_7889f7ca\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cThe goal is to raise awareness and help people internalise the experience of how deaf people can do anything except hear clearly. This event supports DeafSA Western Cape and continues their work in educating the public,\u201d <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohammed added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Promoting the event took various forms, utilising social media platforms and local radio. \u201cWe advertised through Facebook, Instagram, emails, WhatsApp broadcasts and Heart FM was a great supporter this year,\u201d Mohammed said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His promotional efforts paid off, with participants embracing the experience wholeheartedly. \u201cThey want more,\u201d Mohammed said with a smile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey loved the walk and even asked for more kilometers next time. The feedback was great \u2013 they really enjoyed it and found it eye-opening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the key messages Mohammed hopes participants took away from the event is that Deaf people are just as capable as anyone else. \u201cThe more people understand about deafness and the deaf community, the more they get involved. Deaf people are human, just like everyone else. There\u2019s no room for negative thoughts or misconceptions,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Mohammed has plans to keep the momentum going. \u201cDeafSA Western Cape is committed to raising awareness every month with different themes. For example, October is Cancer Awareness Month and we\u2019re planning something for the deaf community with a focus on cancer survivors. We\u2019ll keep on doing more to foster understanding and support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The walk was also a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and understanding.
