His son, Shabeer Dawood<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>, reflected: \u201cMy dad was an amazing man with the simplest approach to life, whether it was with family, friends or the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bhatkar family has been a cornerstone of Newlands since 1929, establishing the renowned Avenue Cafe, famous for its samoosas and home baked goods. As the second youngest of 10 siblings, Mushtaq became a guiding light for his family. \u201cWe took guidance and wisdom from him,\u201d Dawood shared. \u201cHis death was very sudden and a shock, \u201cbut we find comfort in the words \u2018From God we came, to God we will return\u2019, believing he was granted the highest place in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Images\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_7712d217\">\n<div class=\"slide\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/12325\/234dfadbac9940bcb8ad7b5df7c1ebd1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/192c3cdfaa9242838c71de4c332e8b76.jpg\" title=\"PHOTO: suplied\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">PHOTO: suplied<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr B was a cherished figure in the community. Known for his ever-present smile and warm demeanour, he created a welcoming space at Avenue Cafe that attracted generations of loyal patrons. Vanessa Raphaely, a long-time Newlands resident, described the loss: \u201cMr Bhatkar, beloved by generations of Southern Suburbs and specifically Newlands families, passed away suddenly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was the friendliest person on the planet, whose cafe has been a beacon of community enterprise and warmth for my entire lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-old-boy\">Old Boy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond his role at Avenue Cafe, Mr B was deeply involved with South African College High School, one of the prestigious schools in the Southern Suburbs, where his sons were alumni. \u201cHe was given the Old Boy honorary, even though he wasn\u2019t an alumnus himself,\u201d said Dawood, highlighting the deep bond between Mr B and the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr B\u2019s warmth was reflected in his personal connections. Raphaely added: \u201cHe remembered everyone. Whether you had left Newlands to travel or emigrate, when you returned for his legendary samoosas he would ask how you were by name.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though his passing was sudden the Bhatkar family is determined to carry on his legacy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe still intend Avenue Cafe to remain a business as long as we can,\u201d said Dawood. \u201cWe will continue the legacy as we assess matters.\u201d Dawood promised that the vision for Avenue Cafe will live on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Newlands mourns the loss of this community legend, Mushtaq \u201cMr B\u201d Bhatkar will be remembered
