{"id":44154,"date":"2024-11-26T08:00:24","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T06:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/40-years-strong-the-rondebosch-runners-inspiring-journey-20241126\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T23:10:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T21:10:11","slug":"40-years-strong-the-rondebosch-runners-inspiring-journey-20241126","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/40-years-strong-the-rondebosch-runners-inspiring-journey-20241126\/","title":{"rendered":"40 years strong: The Rondebosch runners\u2019 inspiring journey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Rondebosch Rocky Road Runners celebrated their 40th anniversary, reflecting on decades of camaraderie and running together. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>From an informal gathering in 1984 to a well-established community, the group is known for fostering inclusivity and support. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Despite Andrew stepping down, the group\u2019s legacy of connection, fitness, and fun is set to continue under new leadership.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rondebosch Rocky Road Runners (RRRR) celebrated a remarkable milestone on Tuesday 19 November, marking 40 years of shared runs, deep friendships, and a vibrant, welcoming community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What started in 1984 as an informal gathering of like-minded runners has blossomed into a cherished tradition, strengthening bonds in Rondebosch and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday morning, 52 runners gathered for an early run up to Rhodes Memorial, the group\u2019s signature route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This scenic path, known for its stunning sunrise views, encapsulates the spirit of the RRRR: a mixture of fitness, fellowship, and fun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The run was not only a celebration of the group\u2019s history but also a testament to the dedication of those who have kept the group alive through word of mouth and a shared love for running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ken Andrew, one of the group\u2019s original members and a key figure in its continued success, reflected on the journey. \u201cIt\u2019s about the people you meet, the friendships that develop, and the sense of camaraderie that has always defined this group,\u201d Andrew said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about running; it\u2019s about being there for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew has been a steadfast leader, keeping track of every runner who has ever participated in RRRR, knowing each member\u2019s name and their place in the group\u2019s rich history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 600 runners have joined the group throughout the years, with the newest member proudly taking the milestone number 599 just last week. \u201cWe\u2019ve had so many people come through the group, and it\u2019s always exciting to welcome new faces,\u201d Andrew explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RRRR is known for its informal, yet effective structure. Routes are created and shared mostly by word of mouth, and participants come together three times a week for their regular runs, enjoying routes through Rondebosch\u2019s streets and scenic landmarks like Newlands Forest and the Liesbeek River. The group is open to all runners, from those starting out to seasoned athletes, and always ensures that no one is left behind. \u201cThe beauty of RRRR is that we run together, but we don\u2019t leave anyone behind,\u201d Andrew says. \u201cWe stop at various points along the way to make sure everyone stays together and has a chance to catch their breath.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erica Leppan, a newer member of RRRR, has embraced the group\u2019s ethos of inclusion and support. \u201cThe 40th anniversary celebration wasn\u2019t just about running. It\u2019s about the relationships we\u2019ve built along the way, and the sense of community that\u2019s fostered every week,\u201d Leppan shares. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful, welcoming space for anyone who wants to run and connect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking to the future, Andrew acknowledged that at 81, he\u2019s ready to hand over the reins to a new generation of runners. \u201cI\u2019ve already identified someone in their thirties to take over, and I hope they will continue the tradition of keeping the group well-organised and welcoming,\u201d Andrew said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the RRRR moves into its next chapter, the essence of the group remains unchanged: a place where runners of all abilities can connect, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, and build lasting friendships. Whether you\u2019re a seasoned marathoner or a casual runner, RRRR is all about the journey, not the finish line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s 40th anniversary celebration is a powerful reminder of the lasting bonds formed through running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the passing of the baton to younger leadership, the future of RRRR is bright, and its legacy of camaraderie and fitness will continue to
