{"id":43998,"date":"2024-12-12T12:49:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T10:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/blue-train-parks-iconic-mini-blue-train-returns-after-major-refurbishment-20241212\/"},"modified":"2025-03-19T23:18:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T21:18:24","slug":"blue-train-parks-iconic-mini-blue-train-returns-after-major-refurbishment-20241212","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/blue-train-parks-iconic-mini-blue-train-returns-after-major-refurbishment-20241212\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Train Park\u2019s iconic mini-Blue Train returns after major refurbishment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Blue Train Park in Mouille Point has reopened after extensive refurbishment, featuring smoother rides, larger carriages, and pet-friendly facilities. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The 66-year-old park, operated by the Rotary Club of Sea Point, will be open daily for the holiday season. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Officials and residents celebrated the train\u2019s relaunch, emphasizing its nostalgic charm and modern improvements.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The City\u2019s much-loved mini\u2013Blue Train is officially on track and ready to welcome visitors back this holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few months of extensive refurbishments the revitalised train, based in the Blue Train Park in Mouille Point, is back in action from10 December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The park was established 66 years ago and is run by Rotary Club Sea Point.The train, fondly known as the \u201cOld Lady\u201d train, operates on a circular 400 m track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it would be wrong to refer to it as \u201cOld\u201d, as the new train boasts bigger carriages, is pet-friendly and runs much more smoothly and quietly than the previous one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the official launch on Tuesday, Arifa Parker, president of Sea Point Rotary Club, said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"Middle\" id=\"embed_340f07be\">\n<div class=\"text\">\u201cTo see the train going is such a good feeling. I know people will enjoy it. I can\u2019t thank all the people who supported us enough. It\u2019s not the old lady, it\u2019s a new fashionable lady.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>She explained that the park would be open from Monday to Sunday throughout the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Vos, Mayco member for Economic Growth, said the city is proud to be part of this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has been a historic lease agreement between the City of Cape Town and the club. I came here as a young boy with my parents and I think many Capetonians [enjoyed this service]. So, seeing the train now revitalised adds a beautiful experience for people to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the park had been added to the Cape Town Tourism visitor\u2019s guide as one of the must-experience activities under its pocket-friendly campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to encourage locals to explore their city. So, we have a pocket-friendly campaign to make it more accessible and affordable. This will fall under the 50 things under the R50 campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andries Keyser, a train specialist and founder of the Winelands Light Railway, led the refurbishment project. He said it took about six months to complete the project as the train had to be dismantled completely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis train is so well-known we cannot wait for visitors to experience the new and improved version.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said from now on the train will be serviced regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sea Point resident Shannon Temple brought her 3-year-old daughter Gabriella to the park for a train ride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cIt\u2019s school holidays and we were walking around. We haven\u2019t been on the Blue Train in a long time. The train ride was lovely and the atmosphere wonderful.
