Pelican <\/a>Park High School learner Mateo Pinto has been selected to represent South Africa at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup in M\u00e9rida, Mexico, from Friday 25 September to Sunday 4 October<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grade 8B learner’s selection marks a major achievement for both the school and the wider Pelican Park community, with teachers, family and fellow learners celebrating his success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baseball journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mateo’s baseball journey began at the age of nine when he joined the Grassy Park Crusaders Baseball Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although he also enjoys soccer and currently plays for Strandfontein Soccer Club, baseball quickly became his passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He started playing the sport during the Covid-19 lockdown after being invited to attend training sessions when organised soccer activities were restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was invited to go to baseball training because we couldn’t play soccer at the time. After that, I never missed a season and have played ever since,” said Mateo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family affair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Baseball runs in the family, with his brother and two cousins also actively involved in the sport.
Over the years, Mateo has participated in five national tournaments, representing teams from the Under-9 to Under-15 age groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of his most memorable achievements came in the Under-12 division when his team won a national tournament and earned the opportunity to compete in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That was the best time of my life,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being selected for the South African Under-15 Boys Baseball Team is another dream come true for the young athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It felt like a dream come true. Now I must just do my best and train hard,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balance <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Balancing schoolwork and sport can be challenging, especially with training taking place three times a week, but Mateo remains committed to both his academic and sporting goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, he hopes to one day play in Major League Baseball (MLB), the highest level of professional baseball in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help cover the costs associated with the international tournament, Mateo and his family have established a crowdfunding campaign and welcome sponsorship support from the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelican Park High School principal Shariefa Clark praised the learner’s achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are immensely proud of Mateo. He is a learner of excellence and an inspiration to our community. He is keeping both the Pelican Park and South African flags flying high,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
