{"id":303952,"date":"2026-06-12T12:49:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T10:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/?p=303952"},"modified":"2026-06-12T13:19:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T11:19:30","slug":"mother-and-calf-whale-spotted-inside-va-waterfront-harbour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/mother-and-calf-whale-spotted-inside-va-waterfront-harbour\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother and calf whale spotted inside V&amp;A Waterfront harbour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A rare encounter unfolded at the V&amp;A Waterfront recently when two whales, believed to be a mother and calf were spotted gliding through the busy harbour waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While whale sightings are becoming increasingly common along Cape Town&#8217;s coastline, seeing them venture into one of the country&#8217;s busiest working harbours remains an unusual spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A video shared by boat restoration company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1336756528422276\">Aspoesterjie Adventures<\/a> captured the remarkable sight of the two believed to be humpback whales gliding through the waters of the harbour, offering spectators an unforgettable glimpse of the majestic mammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heather Wares, communications manager for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquarium.co.za\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.aquarium.co.za\/\">Two Oceans Aquarium<\/a>, said whales coming into the V&amp;A Waterfront harbour is a \u201crelatively rare\u201d occurrence, especially a mother and calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, when they do venture into the harbour, it is usually due to following a school of fish for sustenance purposes. Sometimes, during bad weather, marine animals make their way into the harbour for shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that once Port Control was alerted to the whales&#8217; presence, all vessels operating in the harbour were notified to exercise caution and avoid any potential collisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to V&amp;A Waterfront marine manager Joshio Fisher, whales were traditionally more commonly spotted along the False Bay coastline, but sightings in Table Bay have become increasingly frequent in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the animal showed no signs of injury and added
