Groote Schuur Primary School in Rondebosch celebrated its 90th anniversary with a Shakespeare-themed event on Thursday 23 April. The celebration combined literature, creativity, and school pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The milestone saw learners dress as book characters and form a human \u201c90\u201d to symbolise unity and the school\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
School librarian Kaylin Haywood said the idea to link William Shakespeare\u2019s birthday with the anniversary reflected the school\u2019s focus on literacy and heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe idea to combine William Shakespeare\u2019s birthday with our school\u2019s 90th anniversary stemmed from our commitment to celebrating both literary excellence and our rich school heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShakespeare represents timeless storytelling and language, which aligns closely with our focus on literacy. The 90th milestone gave us a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our journey and achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haywood said learners responded with enthusiasm to the dress-up element and activities throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMany embraced the opportunity to come dressed as their favourite book characters or in Shakespearean-inspired attire. Their excitement was evident throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said the school used the event to encourage participation and creativity around reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the main highlights was the human \u201c90\u201d formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haywood said it symbolised unity and pride across the school community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt visually represented our collective journey over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A balloon display also formed part of the visual celebration on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haywood said literacy and reading remain a core focus at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe continuously encourage a love for reading through various programmes and activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said the celebration supported these goals by making literature interactive and visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt reinforced the importance of books and storytelling in learners\u2019 daily lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Haywood said the school plans to build on the milestone through future literacy-driven activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
