A people’s person with a heart for the community. This is how Faiek Fredericks, chair of the Maitland Residents and Ratepayers Association (MRRA<\/a>), will be remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fredericks, who dedicated many years to serve the community, died earlier this month after suffering a heart attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was buried on Wednesday 1 April according to Muslim rites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graham Daniels, MRRA safety and security member, said he knew Fredericks for 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was passionate about the community. He is the one who would wake up at 03:00 and go to your house if there was a burglary. He was a genuine person when it came to the needs of the community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniels described his passing as a “huge loss” for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We hope to lead the association in the same way he did. He did not lead by words but by action. His passing leaves a deep void in our community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Maitland has lost not only a committed leader, but a man who genuinely cared, someone who gave of himself without expecting anything in return.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fredericks was also a dedicated member of the Maitland Neighbourhood Watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MRRA said in a statement: \u201cHe was more than a leader; he was a pillar of strength within the community\u2026 He dedicated countless hours to addressing community concerns, improving safety, and advocating for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was known for his accessibility, his willingness to listen, and his ability to bring people together in pursuit of a better Maitland.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association held a memorial service at Fredericks’ home in Kensington Road on Saturday 11 April, where residents paid tribute to his role in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“His contributions were not measured in titles, but in the real and lasting difference he made in the lives of others. Whether quietly assisting behind the scenes or standing at the forefront of community matters, Faiek served with sincerity and purpose,” explained Daniels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association is currently led by Keith Daniels, MRRA deputy chair, until its next AGM early next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheslyn Steenberg, Ward 56 councillor, said Fredericks served the community with “unwavering commitment”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was always going above and beyond for the benefit of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“His presence, leadership, and willingness to step in wherever needed made a lasting impact on so many of us. He will be deeply missed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
