CAPE TOWN – <\/strong>The South African Navy<\/a> pulled out all the stops and hosted an unforgettable display of military prowess and discipline when it opened its doors to the public for this year’s SA Navy Festival, which took place from Friday 17 April to Sunday 19 April at the East Dockyard in Simon’s Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The much-anticipated annual event drew thousands of visitors and offered an engaging and educational experience, providing a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Navy. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is a highlight on South Africa’s maritime calendar and showcased the Navy’s fleet, personnel and heritage, while strengthening public understanding of its role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naval operations <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The festival aimed to bridge this gap by giving the public first-hand insight into naval operations, capabilities and career opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme was expanded to appeal to a wide audience, including families, maritime enthusiasts and young people considering a future in the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key attractions included ship and submarine tours, arena activities such as the gun run, Maritime Reaction Squadron capability demonstrations, precision drill displays, as well as a range of static displays and exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SA Navy’s Senior Staff Officer Navy Public Relations, Captain Theo Mabina, expressed gratitude for the thousands of visitors who embraced the wet weather and freezing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The SA Navy could successfully execute the festival this is attributed to meticulous planning which included other partners such as the City of Cape Town, MyCiTi Bus park-and-ride facilities and Peninsula Beverages, and special train schedules provided by PRASA,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A group of young participants from Ocean View also delivered a precision drill routine, which contributed positively to the overall programme and was well received, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided tours <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Highlights included guided fleet tours, where visitors boarded selected naval vessels and explored a Type 209 submarine under the guidance of trained personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Military precision displays drew crowds, with performances by drill teams, Officers’ Sword Drill units and Sea Cadets showcasing discipline and skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The night-shoot firing display offered a dramatic spectacle under the evening sky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performances <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment also played a key role, with live performances by the SA Navy Band adding to the festive atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors enjoyed capability exhibitions, including search and rescue demonstrations and firefighting displays, highlighting the Navy’s specialised skills and readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families were catered for with food stalls, arts and crafts, and dedicated children’s entertainment areas, ensuring a lively and inclusive environment for all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival ran daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with free entry, encouraging the public to learn more about the Navy’s contribution to national security and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
