{"id":297994,"date":"2026-02-17T08:41:41","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T06:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/?p=297994"},"modified":"2026-02-17T08:41:43","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T06:41:43","slug":"ricardo-snell-cycling-hangberg-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/ricardo-snell-cycling-hangberg-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Ricardo Snell cycling journey inspires Hangberg support ahead of Cycle Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In Hangberg, Ricardo Snell cycling has become a powerful symbol of hope, resilience and community spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past several years, residents have watched the 26-year-old pedal his way from humble beginnings to becoming a familiar and admired figure among local cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snell lives with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a condition he manages with medication, but which has never dimmed his enthusiasm or determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he found direction and purpose on two wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I love cycling because it is fun and makes me feel free,&#8221; Snell says. &#8220;When I am on the bike, I forget about everything else.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ricardo-snell-cycling-journey-began-in-his-teens\"> Ricardo Snell cycling journey began in his teens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ricardo Snell cycling journey started during his teenage years when friends invited him to ride with a local group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as casual weekend rides quickly developed into a passion that changed his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, he reached a major milestone by participating in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the iconic 109 km race around the Cape Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He just needed a chance, and cycling gave him one,&#8221; says his father, Alex Snell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It has helped him stay focused and given him something positive to look forward to.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-community-support-fuels-ricardo-snell-cycling-dream\"> Community support fuels Ricardo Snell cycling dream<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Snell trains regularly with a group of community cyclists who ride together most Saturdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through these rides, he has gained not only fitness but also friendship and encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ricardo is special,&#8221; says supporter Navadly Koopman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Supporting him is not just about a bike. It is about helping him stay motivated and connected.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-financial-barriers-threaten\">Financial barriers threaten <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his dedication, a major obstacle now threatens his participation in this year\u2019s race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snell does not own a suitable bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, a borrowed bike broke near Noordhoek, forcing him to withdraw before finishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year he needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A roadworthy bicycle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cycling shoes (size seven)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transport to the start line<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entry fees and timing chip<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A timing chip alone costs about R250, while a decent bicycle can cost around R8 000 \u2014 far beyond his family\u2019s means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hangberg-rallies-behind-ricardo-snell-cycling-campaign\"> Hangberg rallies behind Ricardo Snell cycling campaign<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The appeal to support Snell began when he reached out to a neighbour for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A message shared on a community chat quickly sparked offers of assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some residents have pledged bicycles needing repairs, while others have started fundraising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When he sees everyone cheering, he feels proud,&#8221; Koopman says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It shows him that he is valued and that the community believes in him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-than-a-race\">More than a race <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents are already planning to line the Hout Bay route on race day to cheer him on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many in Hangberg, supporting Snell represents more than helping an athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a reminder of the power of community, belonging and second chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those wishing to assist can
