After recognising an increasing need for food security among some learners, staff and management at Holy Cross High School in Maitland launched a Sandwich Drive last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school caters for about 209 learners, many of whom come from financially disadvantaged households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charmaine Human, school secretary, said the initiative was introduced to ensure that no child has to attend classes on an empty stomach<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany of our learners come from homes where food insecurity is a daily reality. This initiative is about meeting an immediate need with dignity, care, and compassion, so that our learners are able to focus on learning rather than hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human said: \u201cAt this stage, it is an ongoing initiative and will continue for as long as there is a need and as long as we are able to sustain it with the help of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that they are always in need of donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe community can get involved by donating bread, sandwich spreads such as peanut butter, jam, fish paste, tuna or margarine, as well as by offering financial contributions. Even the smallest contribution makes a meaningful difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She expressed her gratitude to those who have supported the initiative to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to every individual, business, and organisation that has already contributed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human said their generosity has had a \u201cdirect and positive\u201d impact on learners\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause of you, our learners feel seen, supported, and cared for. We are truly grateful.\u201d
