CAPE TOWN –<\/strong> The development of young athletes across the Western <\/a>Cape received a much-needed boost by the provincial government, which committed R130 million, over three years, to a School Sport Strategy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy, launched at the Lavender Hill Shared Facility on Monday 10 February, is described as a “pathway for learner development and social cohesion across communities”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie and Provincial Education Minister David Maynier as well as National Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube, and community leaders and private-sector partners together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety through sport<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy serves as a practical prevention pillar of the government’s broader Safety Plan, recognising that structured sport keeps young people safe, engaged and supported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“School sport is not an event, but a pathway,” emphasised Mackenzie. “This strategy ensures talent, regardless of where a learner comes from, is identified, supported and given room to grow. When we remove barriers we open doors for young people to reach their full potential.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development framework<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comprehensive framework improves coordination among stakeholders, expands sporting access and creates sustainable platforms for youth development from playground to international levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maynier, from an education perspective, highlighted sport’s transformative role: “Sport plays a critical role in building confident, resilient learners who are more engaged in school and communities. We will have a clear development pathway to nurture talented learners and drive sporting excellence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National recognition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gwarube praised the province’s leadership: “By committing significant resources to school-sport infrastructure, coaching, equipment, leagues and learner-participation programmes it is setting a standard, showing what is possible when we the prioritise full development of learners.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
