The City of Cape Town is reminding residents who are struggling financially that support is available. Households earning below R7\u202f500 per month may qualify for indigent assistance, while pensioners aged 60 and older with a household income of R27\u202f000 or less are encouraged to apply for rebates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, Mayco Member for Finance, said the City recently expanded the qualifying threshold for pensioners and social-grant recipients to allow more residents to benefit from Lifeline tariffs and rates rebates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The social-support package for 2025-’26 has also increased to R5,1\u202fbillion, providing relief on rates and services. Eligible households can access free basic services and may qualify for a 100\u202f% discount on property rates.\u201cOfficials at Customer Interaction Centres are ready to assist residents,\u201d Mbandezi said. “We encourage everyone to find out more about the support available.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added pensioners should note that with the new General Valuation (GV2025), starting 1\u202fJuly this year, they will need to reapply for any existing benefits in the new financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City also thanked residents who pay their municipal accounts. \u201cPayments from residents are vital to keep service delivery going. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The average payment ratio for the 12 months ending December last year was 97,9\u202f%, showing most residents continue to pay their accounts and trust in the City\u2019s responsible management of public funds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents can visit their nearest Customer Interaction Centre to apply for assistance or find out more about qualifying criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
