CAPE TOWN –<\/strong> The City of Cape Town has made significant progress on the Muizenberg beachfront upgrade over the past 10 months and is implementing special measures to ensure visitors can still enjoy the popular destination during the festive season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work will pause from 19 December 2025 until 12 January 2026, providing temporary relief for holidaymakers flocking to one of Cape Town\u2019s most beloved beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Festive-season access arrangements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the builder\u2019s break visitors will have temporary access to the popular St James Walkway via the western parking area. While the access will be compacted it remains unpaved and not yet wheelchair accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small section of the western parking area next to the railway line will be available to the public on gravel surfacing, as the area remains under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bulk of the promenade and beach will remain open and accessible, with bathing boxes, central ablution facilities, showers and NGO buildings continuing normal operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major infrastructure investment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgrade commenced in February 2025 on the western side of Surfer\u2019s Corner, with work currently focused on replacing the aged seawall. Major upgrades to public amenities will begin in earnest early in the new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for Spatial Planning and the Environment, Eddie Andrews, emphasised the long-term benefits of the investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis investment in the Muizenberg beachfront will mitigate the impact of climate change for decades to come, safeguard underground services infrastructure such as sewer, stormwater and water mains, and importantly, improve visitors\u2019 overall experience with new and upgraded amenities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction progress<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large precast sections of the new main promenade and stepped revetment section at Surfer\u2019s Corner are currently being delivered and positioned using cranes, with this work continuing until December 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eastern parking area in front of the civic centre has been completed and is fully accessible to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety and community considerations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All active work areas will be fenced off during construction, with the work area on the beach\u2019s western corner remaining off-limits for safety reasons. However, the surf area remains open for public use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temporary ablution facilities will be available during the builder\u2019s break, and the Shark Spotters office will be relocated on top of the facility in preparation for central area work beginning next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitor guidance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrews advised early arrival on busy beach days and patience with slower traffic flow during peak periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are excited to welcome visitors to Muizenberg this festive season. Please adhere to the signage, stay clear of fenced-off areas, but most importantly, be safe and enjoy yourselves,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City thanked the local community and business owners for their ongoing support and cooperation during the extensive upgrade project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
