The Athlone community is split ahead of the Najwa Petersen parole hearing expected later this month. Petersen is serving a 28-year sentence for the 2006 murder of her husband and Cape Town music icon Taliep Petersen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents met at the Noah Centre in Lawrence Road, Athlone, on Thursday 6 November to share their views. The Athlone Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Athlone Police Station hosted the public meeting to collect feedback on her possible release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debate over forgiveness and justice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Vernon Piedt, chairperson of the Athlone CPF, said the atmosphere was tense. \u201cThere was pain on both sides,\u201d he said. \u201cSome residents wanted her to stay behind bars. Others believed everyone deserves a second chance. The community remains divided between forgiveness and justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colonel Junaid Alcock, commander of the Athlone Police Station, said the meeting aimed to gather community views before the Najwa Petersen parole hearing on Wednesday 26 November. \u201cWe created a safe space for residents to express concerns and help the community move forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family seeks healing and reintegration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Petersen\u2019s son, Sulaiman Effendi, told residents he would take full responsibility for his mother after her release. \u201cIt will take time for her to adjust, but I will help her through it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piedt added that both the Petersen and Effendi families continue to feel the impact of the tragedy. \u201cI asked everyone to find forgiveness within themselves,\u201d he said. \u201cForgiveness forms part of the healing process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City honours Taliep Petersen\u2019s legacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The meeting took place a day after the City of Cape Town<\/a><\/strong> announced that the late Taliep Petersen and his musical partner David Kramer would receive the Freedom of the City of Cape Town. This is the city\u2019s highest civic honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petersen last appeared before a parole board on Wednesday 11 September 2024, when her application was denied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
