A pupil at the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Constantia allegedly attempted to harm self on Thursday 23 October. Staff quickly moved learners to the school hall to ensure their safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school sent a letter to parents and pupils, saying the incident \u201chad the potential to cause distress within our school community but was successfully averted.\u201d Staff confirmed that the learner is safe and receiving care and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Classes were briefly disrupted. Teachers moved pupils away from the area.
A senior learner said many classmates saw the incident happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLots of pupils were crying and our class could see the area where it happened,\u201d said one pupil, who asked to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A mother of a pupil said the incident left families anxious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was concerned when I heard about this, because there have been so many stories in the media lately about pupils acting out. As a parent I worry about the kind of pressures high-school pupils are experiencing. My daughter was very upset,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said the school acted with care and responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI think the school was reassuring. It communicates well with parents. I do not think it is to blame for the boy\u2019s mental-health problems. According to my daughter, the school knew he was receiving counselling and treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its letter, the school called on parents to check in with their children, be aware of their needs, and contact the school\u2019s counselling team if support is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
