{"id":272102,"date":"2025-10-23T15:50:47","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T13:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/longbeach-mall-shoppers-create-festive-tree-from-recycled-materials\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T15:53:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T13:53:00","slug":"longbeach-mall-shoppers-create-festive-tree-from-recycled-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/longbeach-mall-shoppers-create-festive-tree-from-recycled-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Longbeach Mall shoppers create festive tree from recycled materials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>CAPE TOWN-<\/strong>More than 20 visitors and their families enjoyed a weekend of getting into the festive spirit and crafting Christmas decorations from recycled materials.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month a workshop was held at Longbeach Mall in Noordhoek, where guests took part in a creative community project in which all created decorations, two items per person, one to take home and the other for the mall\u2019s Christmas tree with the creator\u2019s name attached. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, which fostered the idea of transforming recycled items into works of art, was organised by Irene Oxley, president of the South African Society of Artists.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day visitors of all ages participated, with guided instruction, in a collaborative enterprise that enabled them to walk away with something for their own tree as well as a heightened environmental consciousness.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to help from Melissa Tiemie and Lorraine Hendricks of Ocean View the tree went up and on display on Sunday 19 October,&#8221; said Oxley. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also hosted a similarly-themed art exhibition, which promoted environmental sustainability with Earth Art: Saving the planet one brushstroke at a time, from Tuesday 2 September to Monday 1 October.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information contact Oxley at 082 303 6798.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PHOTO-2025-10-15-12-_98851.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Local cartoon artist Gavin Thompson alongside Irene Oxley.
