Up to 77 families were displaced by a fire that destroyed several homes in Phumlani Village on Sunday 19 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening at 21:00, the City of Cape Town\u2019s Fire and Rescue Service received a report of wood and iron structures alight at Phumlani Village, an informal settlement in Eagle Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Seven firefighting resources as well as an incident management team were dispatched. It took firefighters just over two hours to extinguish the fire,” said <\/strong>Edward Bosch, the City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 17 wood and iron structures were destroyed, leaving 77 persons displaced, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ward 67 councillor Geraldine Gordon also assisted some of the victims on the day. She said she was deeply disturbed and saddened by the fires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“About 80 people are displaced and traumatised by the fires. The City will clear the debris and will also check the details of those who were displaced. I appreciate the involvement of Gift of the Givers who confirmed they will provide sanitary goods, food, and clothing over the five days. I also want to thank people who are reaching out and want to donate.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donations can be dropped off at Gordon’s office on the corner of Buck Road and 6th Avenue in Lotus River behind the library, explained Gail Johnstone, the personal assistant (PA) to Gordon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Once the clean-up is done Gordon will arrange for the debris to be picked up and then the distribution of clothing,” said Johnstone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
