{"id":271209,"date":"2025-10-06T17:24:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T15:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/?p=271209"},"modified":"2025-10-06T17:25:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T15:25:00","slug":"camps-bay-officers-seize-alcohol-arrest-teens-during-matric-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/camps-bay-officers-seize-alcohol-arrest-teens-during-matric-party\/","title":{"rendered":"Camps Bay officers seize alcohol, arrest teens during matric party"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Cape Town<\/strong>&#8211; Camps Bay police say alcohol consumption on beaches remains a significant concern, as it often leads to unruly behaviour, safety risks and violations of public regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police and law enforcement agencies were out in full force on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 October at Clifton and Camps Bay beaches to ensure safety as valedictory <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/cape-town-beaches-under-police-watch-for-matric-valedictory-parties\/\">celebrations<\/a> start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annually, matric learners gather on Cape Town\u2019s beaches for valedictory, also known as \u201cditch day,\u201d parties to mark the end of the school term before their final exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of young people flocked to the beaches and despite multiple warnings to avoid bringing alcohol, officers confiscated 799 units of alcohol during search operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capt Liaan Janse van Rensburg, Camps Bay Police Station commander, tells <em>People\u2019s Post<\/em> that a common assault case was registered at the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo learners, both 18 years old, were arrested for assaulting a law enforcement officer. But annually these parties are marred by drownings, injuries and fights,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith says their focus is on keeping beaches alcohol-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe amount of alcohol confiscated is of concern, particularly as we\u2019ve highlighted time and again that it is illegal to consume alcohol in public spaces, but also the potential consequences of driving or swimming under the influence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith warns that those found guilty of misconduct would face the full might of the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn the roads, we witnessed once again the spike in drunk driving that has become commonplace over payday and month-end weekends. It\u2019s mind-boggling, considering the many other options that are available. I want to remind motorists and the public in general that a good time and good decisions are not mutually exclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In about 14 days, the class of 2025 will sit down for the final exam due to start on Tuesday 21 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Western Cape about 67 000 candidates will write the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Maynier, the provincial education minister, urges the public to ensure that the exams proceed without any interruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe appeal to the public to prioritise our matric candidates they are already under enough pressure, and do
