As blossoms return and the air warms, many in the community are shaking off winter\u2019s chill and embracing spring. However, along with sunshine and flowers come seasonal health challenges, particularly for those living with allergies, asthma, or sensitive immune systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
September marks Pharmacy Month, a time to acknowledge the pivotal role pharmacists play in healthcare. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cThink Health, Think Pharmacy , One Profession, Many Roles\u201d<\/em>, highlights how pharmacists contribute far beyond dispensing medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The message also connects with the global campaign by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), which stresses the importance of pharmacists in achieving Universal Health Coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One pharmacist who embodies this vision is Olwethu Mbulawa, a University of the Western Cape (UWC) graduate and practising pharmacist. Her work reflects the many responsibilities pharmacists carry,from managing chronic conditions like asthma and sinusitis to raising spring health awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mbulawa\u2019s long-term dream is to open a pharmacy in township communities. Her motivation stems from a belief that access to healthcare should be a basic right, not a privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPharmacy is not just about dispensing medicine; it\u2019s about being a trusted healthcare partner in the community,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With spring comes an increase in pollen and other triggers that affect respiratory conditions. Mbulawa stresses the importance of proactive management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSpring can be a challenging time for those with asthma or sinusitis,\u201d she notes. \u201cIt\u2019s crucial to monitor pollen levels and adjust treatment when needed to maintain good health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She encourages patients to stay informed, follow treatment plans closely, and seek advice from their pharmacist when symptoms worsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Accessibility remains at the heart of Mbulawa\u2019s mission. She points to the challenges faced by people in rural and township areas, where pharmacies and clinics are often scarce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To address this, she supports mobile clinics and telehealth services that take healthcare directly to the people. \u201cWe need to bring healthcare to the people, not wait for them to come to us,\u201d she emphasises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Her active involvement in community outreach and health education programmes further reflects her commitment to reducing these gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pharmacy Month also reminds us that pharmacists are far more than dispensers. They serve as educators, counsellors, and advocates for health equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As Mbulawa\u2019s work shows, pharmacists influence public health outcomes and help build stronger, healthier communities. Their daily efforts extend beyond the pharmacy counter and into the lives of those they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This September, while celebrating Pharmacy Month, we are called to recognise and support the
