The University of the Western Cape (UWC) secured the 2025 University Sports South Africa (USSA) 7s championship on Sunday (7 September), with their men’s team defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) 19-14 in a closely contested final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victory marked a sweet revenge for UWC, who had suffered a 22-12 defeat to the same opponents during the group stage of the tournament. The Cape Town-based university’s triumph demonstrates the unpredictable nature of sevens rugby, where momentum can shift dramatically between matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UWC’s path to the final was built on solid group stage performances, with victories over Cape Peninsula University of Technology (17-12) and the University of Fort Hare (26-10) securing their place in the knockout rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
