{"id":269702,"date":"2025-08-25T17:07:02","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T15:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/?p=269702"},"modified":"2025-08-25T18:11:55","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T16:11:55","slug":"disability-organisations-in-cape-town-call-for-inclusive-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/disability-organisations-in-cape-town-call-for-inclusive-transport\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability organisations in Cape Town call for inclusive transport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>CAPE TOWN<\/strong>&#8211; A group of people from various disability organisations gathered outside the Cape Town Civic Centre today (25 August), calling on the City to reconsider its decision to severely limit its Dial-a-Ride services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Monday 8 September, the service will only be available to eligible wheelchair users and people with severe walking impairments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armed with placards and chanting, \u201cWe want Dial-a-Ride\u201d the group made sure their demands were heard with passing cars hooting in support of the group\u2019s course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They handed over a memorandum of demands to Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the City, the decision comes as a result of budget constraints. Photo: Kaylynne Bantom<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-prev swiper-button-prev swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"><\/a><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"><\/a><a aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"><\/a><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_pagination swiper-pagination swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent press statement, the City said it can no longer \u201csustain an ever-expanding demand\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the City, the current average cost per trip is R737, with a cost recovery of only 3%<br>It said each user contributes around R22 per trip, while the City contributes approximately R515 and the Western Cape Government R200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo put this in perspective, transporting a single user who travels 21 days a month amounts to roughly R31 000 per month, or R371 000 per year,\u201d read the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A protester, who doesn\u2019t wish to be named said: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/peoplespost\/dial-a-ride-service-cut-sparks-outrage-among-cape-towns-disabled-community\/\">Dial-a-Ride<\/a> stood as a beacon of hope, a dependable service that said \u2018You matter and you belong\u2019 but come September the city will cast those words aside and dismiss thousands of disable people as invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you aren\u2019t fortunate enough to hold a job, you don\u2019t exist. We need to be treated with dignity. Money should be made available for accessible transport. Accessible transport is not just about accessible buses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to <em>People\u2019s Post <\/em>Quintas said he understands the frustration and said they will review the demands made in the memorandum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quintas said he will be meeting with members from various organisation supporting people with disabilities on Tuesday 26
