Muizenberg’s iconic beach huts have the chance to be crowned the Cape’s best tourist attraction; however, their fate depends on Capetonians.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The huts secured a nomination for this year’s Kfm 94.5 annual Best of the Cape Awards and will be hoping to secure enough votes before the end of this week. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voting officially opened on Wednesday July 30 and runs until Thursday August 7.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner of the coveted title will be announced by the end of August. The huts are more than a century old, with origins in the early 1900s. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are competing against four other landmarks, which include the Cango Caves, !Khwa ttu and the Waterfront Duck Co and last year’s winner the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (TMAC).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in the fifth year, the awards were launched in 2021 as a response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They shine the spotlight on some of Cape Town’s tourism attractions and landmarks. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauretta Ngakane, spokesperson for the event organisers, said the initiative was created to help support and uplift local businesses that were impacted by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. Ngakane explained that there have been 17 100 nominations for this year’s awards, an 80% increase from last year. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beach huts<\/a> are among 76 huts that fall under the care of the Beach Hut Trust (BHT). They are managed by the BHT, which was founded by Angela Gorman in 2020 to restore and protect these City assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gorman says they are beaming with pride to have secured a nomination. “It was a lovely surprise to find ourselves listed alongside heavyweight attractions like the Cango Caves and Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (which has won for the past four years),” she said. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
