As South Africans prepare to commemorate the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the Children’s Hospital Trust is calling on the public to bring joy, comfort, and dignity to young patients at the Red Cross War Memorial Children\u2019s Hospital in Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From 14 to 18 July, the hospital welcomes volunteers to spend their 67 minutes for Mandela Day visiting wards and delivering soft toys, activity books, crayons, and warm smiles to children undergoing treatment. It\u2019s a unique opportunity to connect with resilient young patients who are facing serious health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to visits, the Trust urgently appeals for donations of essential items to support its Family Care Project. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These items make a big difference to families who have travelled far often from rural areas or neighbouring countries with limited resources, to seek care for their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cMany of the children in our care come from under-resourced communities and are living with chronic illnesses or recovering from traumatic injuries,\u201d says Taryn Rubenstein, Donor Relations Manager at the Trust.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
For over 65 years, the hospital has served as a lifeline for children from across South Africa and beyond. As the only stand-alone, specialist paediatric hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, it treats more than 250,000 patients each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis Mandela Day, we are honouring Madiba’s legacy by creating moments of happiness for children who need it most,\u201d Rubenstein says. \u201cIt\u2019s about showing up for children fighting big battles, and letting them know they are seen and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
